Why Gamble With Money When You Can Gamble With Your Life….

    By R | August 18, 2008

…That’s the slogan on the T-shirts at Skydive Las Vegas.

That’s where I went skydiving for the first time this past Saturday with two friends, Billie and Tom. The whole idea came up because that’s how Tom wanted to celebrate his birthday this year. Originally, I was just going to go along for moral support and to watch. Somehow, I ended up joining them.

After weighing in, completing the release form and watching the instructional video, we dressed in our jumpsuit and harnesses and met our instructor who we would be attached to for the tandem skydive. We boarded the plane and when we reached the drop height of approximately 3 miles up, we rolled out of the plane and experienced a free fall at 120 mph for nearly a minute. I could see the whole valley from the Strip to Lake Mead and just enjoyed the rush.

When my instructor, Mark, opened the shoot and let me take control of the handles we floated like you would with a parasail, making left and right turns until he took back the controls and navigated us to the landing area adjacent to the office when we had departed just a few minutes earlier.

The landing was a breeze, easy and soft and once on the ground I just sat for a moment collecting myself before joining Billie and Tom to return our equipment and savor the experience together.

Anyway, since the landings take place adjacent to their office at Boulder City Airport, you can go watch the tandem skydivers land for free. If you have the nerve, you can try it for yourself.
