Free Concerts: Jazz in the Park Series
Posted on 9 May 2012 | No responses

The talent is set and the amphitheater is ready for another season of music with Clark County Parks and Recreation’s Jazz in the Park concert series, which celebrates its 23rd year. The free series will feature Spyro Gyra on May 12, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue on May 19, Jeff Golub on May 26, 480 East, featuring Shilts and Matt Marshak on June 2 and Yellowjackets on June 9. Audiences that come early will be treated to the local jazz sounds of the Las Vegas Academy Jazz Combo. Seating for those with picnic baskets, blankets and low-back chairs will begin at 7 p.m. with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Food vendors also will be available on site. Admission and parking are free.
Jazz in the Park favorite Spyro Gyra will launch the series on Saturday, May 12. The group brings an energy to the series that has made it popular for more than 30 years. Since its first release in 1979, Spyro Gyra’s music and style have made it an original force in the music industry. It started in 1974 when bandleader and saxman Jay Beckenstein and keyboardist Jeremy Wall developed an ensemble. Through the years, Wall made his mark as a producer while members Scott Ambush, bass; Julio Fernandez, guitar and Tom Schuman, keyboards joined Beckenstein in the honored Spyro Gyra tradition. Genre icon Boney James described Spyro Gyra’s music in Jazziz Magazine as combining “accessible pop qualities with happy uplifting tones, bringing together elements of jazz, Latin and R&B effortlessly and unconsciously. What they’re doing with electric jazz and unique instrumentation has always had a timeless quality to me.”
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue makes a Jazz in the Park debut on Saturday, May 19. At only 26 years old, this trombone and trumpet player has already worked with jazz, funk and rap music and has been playing with the band Orleans Avenue since 2009. The younger brother of trumpeter and bandleader James Andrews and the grandson of singer and songwriter Jessie Hill, Trombone Shorty – also known as Troy Andrews – has music in his blood.
American jazz guitarist Jeff Golub brings his contemporary stylings to Jazz in the Park on Saturday, May 26. With 11 solo albums and three CDs under his belt as the leader of the instrumental band Avenue Blue, Golub made a name for himself, working with Rod Stewart from 1988 to 1995 and in his early days with Billy Squier. Last year, he was blinded due to a collapse on his optic nerve, but he hasn’t let it stop him from playing music.
Four80East, featuring Shilts and Matt Marshak, will pick up with pace with electro jazz on Saturday, June 2. The Canada-based band consists of musicians Rob DeBoer, keyboards, bass and guitar; and Tony Grace, percussion; and other session musicians. With five CDs in the repertoire, it’s difficult to believe the band began as a studio project in the late 1990s. Guitarist Marshak joins the groove, bringing his crowd pleasing originals to the stage, and Shilts adds a contemporary jazz feeling to round out the evening.
The Yellowjackets round out the series on Saturday, June 9 with smooth jazz and jazz fusion and a storied career in the jazz genre. The Grammy-nominated artists bring a repertoire dating back to 1981 to the stage. The band’s most recent release, Timeline, released in 2011, featured former member and founder Robben Ford and was the band’s 24th album.

Featuring country music’s most successful songwriters and the crowd favorite, “Songs from a hat,” where an original song is written on-the-spot, based on audience suggestions, Nashville Unplugged: The Story Behind the Song is hosted by Brian McComas, who wrote and sang “I Could Never Love You Enough,” and Aaron Benward of Blue County, who wrote and sang “That’s Cool.” All performances begin at 8 p.m. and there is a $5 cover at the door. Guests must be 21 years or older.
- Friday, May 11, 8pm – Ovation at Green Valley Ranch – Featuring guest songwriters Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne
After recording the song, “Just One Touch,” Shane McAnally was given both a publishing deal and recording contract with a major label. McAnally’s eponymous debut album featured the singles “Say Anything” and “Are Your Eyes Still Blue,” which became McAnally’s first single to reach the top 40 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. McAnally’s song-writing credits also include Kenny Chesney’s “Somewhere With You” and Jake Owen’s “Alone With You,” both of which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Josh Osborne broke onto the music scene with the single, “You Only Call Me,” which was recorded by Buck Jones and was a top-five hit on Americana charts. Osborne’s debut album, More Important Things, was released in 2009 and features a unique fusion of folk, rock and blues, mixed with a vocal rasp and unmatched energy.
Doors at 7:15 pm featuring “Songs from a Hat.” Guests that arrive between 7:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. can make up a title to a song and place the suggestion in a hat. The songwriters will pick one title from that hat and then pen a song throughout the course of the evening, to be performed at the end.
