Death Drop by Magician Steve Wyrick

Posted on 03 July 2009

wyrick.jpgAt 8:30 pm., July 4th, members of the public are encouraged to head to the Miracle Mile Shops’ southern Las Vegas Boulevard entrance (by Hawaiian Tropic Zone) to witness a “Death Drop” escape performed by Daredevil Magician Steve Wyrick.

In celebration of Club Tattoo’s grand opening inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, daredevil magician Steve Wyrick will perform a terrifying “Death Drop” escape featuring Chester Bennington, co-owner of Club Tattoo and Linkin Park frontman. Bennington, assisted by members of his new side project Dead by Sunrise, will lock and shackle Wyrick into one of the band’s equipment boxes.  Connected to a crane by only a few thin ropes, the box will be dangled over a bed of 500 flaming spikes 80 feet below.  The ropes will then be set on fire, forcing Wyrick to make his escape before the last rope breaks and sends him plummeting to a fiery death.  Wyrick will have to jump 20 feet off a burning box to a safety rope and rappel down while avoiding the spikes and tremendous heat.  This type of escape has never been attempted by an illusionist anywhere in the world. Afterwards, turn around and look up — fireworks this evening take place across Las Vegas skies!  This is a free event.

Steve Wyrick must of had a problem with the act since there is no possible way to rehearse, where he had his backup plan, appearing in the helicopter. That’s my opinion on why he never dropped or even got in the air.

Anyone standing on the strip only saw him land. The chest was never raised off the ground. It was a waste of 2 hours and caused a lot of people to miss the fireworks.

People actually Booed Steve Wyrick after he exited the helicopter. It was a very disappointing performance. First, they started late which meant standing for a long time. Then they seemed amateurish and unprepared. There was no setup for the stunt. Most of the audience had no idea what he was attempting or what was happening. How could a professional magician blow the setup?
Steve was placed into a metal box behind a curtain (or was he?) that could not be seen. Then it was pretty obvious that he was in the red ambulance parked next to the metal box that moved away slowly. The platform never even left the ground or plunged to the spikes. The announcer (Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington) at one point said “something is happening”, which was his most descriptive comment. If the stunt had gone wrong or really was this lame is unknown. Wyrick may have had no idea that the box never left the ground since he left early. Would have been a real act if the audience could actually see him placed in the box and still see him as it was hoisted.

I don’t think that Wyrick will sell any show tickets to any of the people (or their friends) he subjected to this really bad act. He might have been able to salvage this botched PR stunt if he had apologized to the audience and explained that they had some technical difficulties.

To make things worse, Planet Hollywood forced the audience into a “box Canyon” forcing everyone to exit via the casino. Making it really hard to exit to get a view of Ceasar’s Fireworks.
