The next free annual Jazz in the Park concert is on Saturday, June 5th and will feature Christian Scott beginning at 8pm.

It wasn’t until age 12 that Scott’s musical talent emerged. Since his uncle, saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., was missing a trumpet in his band, Christian picked it up. Since then, members of the hip-hop community as well as jazz purists have respected his style. He released his second recording, Rewind That, in 2006, for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Now based in New York, Scott is trailblazing a new genre of jazz and has performed with the likes of Jill Scott, Mos Def and X-Clan. His latest album is the anticipated Yesterday You Said Tomorrow, which was released March 30.

Starting its 20th year, the free Jazz in the Park concert series has become a Las Vegas tradition. Some of the biggest names in jazz have highlighted this annual series. The next free annual Jazz in the Park concert  is on Saturday, May 29th and will feature Nathan Tanouye & The Las Vegas Jazz Connection beginning at 8pm.

Nathan Tanouye has been principal trombonist for the Las Vegas Philharmonic since 1998, and he has performed with such artists as Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, The Temptations, Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.  He has played in award-winning shows such as The Producers, Hairspray, At the Copa, Storm, and Bette Midlers’ The Showgirl Must Go On, for which he wrote some of the orchestral arrangements.  Las Vegas Jazz Connection has released three CDs, “Coming Home,” the latest, and two which feature big band arrangements of compositions by the late jazz master Russ Freeman: “Crossings” and Remembering Russ.”

Nick Colionne brings a Chicago-bred music steeped in rock, jazz, blues and heavy metal. Colionne turned professional at the age of 15, touring the country with rock bands as well as icons such as The Staples Singers and Curtis Mayfield. Although he had a jazz upbringing, Colionne became well versed in R&B, blues and heavy metal. Colionne launched his solo career in 1994 with It’s My Turn and has been doing well ever since.

Spyro Gyra brings sounds to the series that have made the group fan favorites for more than 30 years.   Genre icon Boney James described Spyro Gyra’s music in Jazziz Magazine as combining “accessible pop qualities with happy uplifting tones, bringing together elements of jazz, Latin and R&B effortlessly and unconsciously.  What they’re doing with electric jazz and unique instrumentation has always had a timeless quality to me.” The latest CD, Down the Wire, was released in 2009.

The free annual Jazz in the Park concert series celebrates its 21st year with free concerts.  Saturday, May 8th will feature Jimmy Scott beginning at 8pm.

Vocalist “Little” Jimmy Scott was born in 1925 with a physical condition that kept him from going through puberty.  When he began singing professionally in the 1940s his distinctive falsetto voice lent itself to ballads and jazz standards.  He made his recording debut in 1948 with Lionel Hampton and the group’s hit Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.  In 1962 a contract dispute led Scott to quit the music business and take a job as a shipping clerk.  He didn’t perform in clubs again until 1985.  In 1991, Sire Records signed Scott for a contract, which led to appearances in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks as well as songs on the soundtracks for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Glengarry Glen Ross.  In 2008, Scott released the album baring the same name as his first recording, Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.

The Sax Pack’s high-energy saxophone technique combines their individual styles and diverse backgrounds for a fresh approach to the music that inspired them all to become musicians – jazz. The evening will feature original music written specifically for The Sax Pack as well as each saxophone player’s signature hits of classic funk, R&B and jazz tunes that get fans out of their seats.

Performing this Saturday, May 23rd at 8 pm will be Delfeayo Marsalis.

The performance on May 23 has been dubbed the “Clean Air Festival” starring Delfeayo Marsalis of the famously talented Marsalis clan of professional musicians. Marsalis has been labeled one of the freshest modern voices on the trombone to arrive in the ‘90s. He has toured internationally with legendary jazz artists Art Blakely, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach as well as with his own modern jazz ensemble. In addition to the concert, environmental organizations will present information, clean green vehicles and plenty of surprises.

Allen Toussaint will kick off the series Saturday, May 9th at 8pm with tunes from his recently released album The Bright Mississippi. The CD comes close on the heels of Allen’s recent high-profile presence at the 2009 Grammy Awards where he was a featured interviewee in the Grammy Legends series. During the awards, Toussaint was honored with the prestigious Trustees Award and participated in the worldwide broadcast in a segment featuring Lil Wayne, Terence Blanchard and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The last concert of The Moonlight Concert Series turns country when The Lost Trailers and Trent Tomlinson perform on Saturday, September 27th at the Clark County Amphitheater.

Ryder Lee and Stokes Nelson met in a church band as teens and have been making music together ever since. They formed The Lost Trailers and played honkeytonks, bars and roadhouses and later moved up to open for Kenny Cheney and Sugarland. The band’s first top 20 single Holler Back is the title track of its first CD that was recently released.

Tomlinson joins The Lost Trailers in the summer’s final Moonlight concert with a little self-described “open a beer, sit in a lawn chair, let’s have a party” country music. The singer-songwriter hails from Kennett, Missouri and has written songs for Emerson Drive and Blue Country before setting out on his own. Tomlinson released his first CD, Country is My Rock, in 2006.

Joe Bonamassa will appear in The Moonlight Concert Series Saturday, September 20th at the Clark County Amphitheater. The free concert begins at 8pm.

Dubbed “the new king of blues” by Guitarist Magazine and “a bold talent” by Billboard, Joe Bonamassa brings his blend of blues and rock to the series. Bonomassa, 31, began playing guitar at age 4, mastered licks by Stevie Ray Vaughan by age 7 and began his professional career at age 10, where he caught the eye of the late B.B. King. By the time he was 12, he was touring with King, which led to opening performances for Buddy Guy, Foreigner, George Thorogood, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman.

Rockapella appears in The Moonlight Concert Series Saturday, September 13th at the Clark County Amphitheater. The free concert begins at 8pm.

Rockapella laid the groundwork for many pop a capella groups today. The groups most recognizable appearances came in the 1990s with its appearance in Folger commercials and the popular PBS geography series Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? The group began performing together on New York City street corners in the 1980s. As the 1990s arrived, Spike Lee and Debbie Allen took notice of the group for their PBS show Spike & Co.: Do It A Capella.

Rockapella took its act to Japan and added a “vocal percussionist.” Since then, the quintet has enjoyed an international and homebred following and released 10 domestic albums, 11 international.

Family Stone Project kicks off the The Moonlight Concert Series Saturday, August 23rd at the Clark County Amphitheater. The free concert begins at 8pm.

Sly & the Family Stone original members Jerry “Papa J” Martini and Cynthia Robinson join vocalist and keyboardist Robert Brookins and Las Vegas residents bassist Blaise Sison, lead guitarist Nate Wingfield, drummer and local resident Frank Klepacki and vocalist Trina Johnson. Martini and Robinson, R&B Pioneer Award winners and Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees, collected a group to carry on the raw Family Stone sound to original and new fans alike.

DeeDee Bridgewater will light the stage on fire with her “musical kaleidoscope” of everything from vocal jazz to scat. Her latest project, Red Earth a Malian Journey, mixes Malian voices, music and traditional instruments with American jazz music and lyrics.
